A Tempura Restaurant I Visit Whenever I Return Home

Every time I return to Japan to visit family, this is one of the restaurants I make sure to visit.

Tempura Tenkō is located in a quiet residential area near Zushi–Hayama.

I have visited several times:

  • Summer 2024
  • Winter 2024
  • Summer 2025

This review is based on those visits combined.


Counter Tempura at Its Best

The restaurant is small, with counter seating only.

The chef prepares each piece of tempura right in front of you.

There is no menu in the usual sense — the meal follows an omakase course, where seasonal ingredients are served one by one.

Freshly fried tempura arrives at the perfect rhythm, allowing each piece to be enjoyed immediately.

Simple, but deeply satisfying.


A Hidden Restaurant in a Residential Neighborhood

The closest station is Zushi–Hayama Station, but the restaurant is not exactly within easy walking distance.

It sits quietly in a residential neighborhood.

From the outside alone, you can already sense that this is a place serious about its food.

Inside, the restaurant is calm and understated.


Beautiful Natural Lighting

One of the most memorable details is the lighting.

Large windows bring natural light into the dining space, but the design prevents direct sunlight from shining in.

Instead, soft light spreads gently across the room.

The result is a calm, comfortable atmosphere that perfectly suits a tempura counter.


Seasonal Tempura Highlights

One of the reasons I keep returning is the seasonal ingredients.

During a summer visit, I enjoyed:

Young sweetfish tempura (Chiayu)

The delicate bitterness captures the feeling of summer.

In winter, one unforgettable dish was:

Shirako tempura (creamy cod milt)

Rich, smooth, and incredibly satisfying.

Another seasonal favorite is ginkgo nuts, which appear occasionally as a supporting but memorable ingredient.

Because my visits to Japan tend to happen around the same times of year, I haven’t experienced every season yet.

One day I would love to try the full four seasons here.

The meal ends with a signature finish:

Tempura egg

Honestly, it might even work well for a discreet date.
