Kitaro (和食 喜多郎) – A Quiet Kappo-Style Restaurant in Shimbashi

Short Verdict

Kitaro (和食 喜多郎) is the kind of restaurant I personally love — a chef-run kappo-style Japanese restaurant where seasonal dishes are served quietly over drinks.

Hidden in a Shimbashi office building, it offers carefully prepared seafood and small dishes that pair beautifully with sake.

🗣 English Support & Practical Notes

The restaurant does not clearly advertise an English menu, and English communication appears limited.

However, Shimbashi is an international business district, so basic communication may be possible.

Because the restaurant offers omakase as well as individual dishes, visitors who are comfortable letting the chef decide can enjoy the experience without needing to order extensively.

A Small Chef-Run Restaurant

Kitaro reminds me very much of Hamada in Tamachi, another small chef-run kappo restaurant I enjoy.

This style of restaurant focuses less on elaborate courses and more on carefully prepared small dishes that pair well with drinks.

For this visit, I mainly ordered recommended seasonal dishes of the day.

The food is clearly designed to be enjoyed alongside sake.

Dishes That Pair Perfectly with Sake

The cooking style here emphasizes classic Japanese flavors.

Highlights included:

  • carefully prepared appetizers
  • yellowtail ara-ni (simmered yellowtail collar)
  • fresh sashimi

Each dish was simple but carefully executed.

The kind of food that quietly encourages you to order another glass of sake.

In fact, I was enjoying the evening so much that I forgot to take photos of some dishes.

A Hidden Gem in Shimbashi

Kitaro is located deep inside a multi-tenant office building, making it somewhat easy to miss.

But once inside, the atmosphere is calm and comfortable.

This is not a loud izakaya — it is a place where adults come to enjoy good food and drinks in a relaxed setting.

During my visit, I was dining alone at the counter.

I ended up chatting with the gentleman seated next to me, who mentioned that he had once been posted to London during his career.

Encounters like this are part of what makes small Japanese restaurants so enjoyable.

Atmosphere

The restaurant has a quiet, mature atmosphere centered around the counter.

The chef clearly takes pride in his cooking, and the environment encourages guests to enjoy their meal slowly.

It’s the kind of place I like to visit when I want a calm evening with good sake and thoughtful cooking.

Final Thoughts

Rating: ★4.4 / 5

Not cheap, but very satisfying.

On nights when I want something a step above a typical izakaya — a quiet place to drink and enjoy seasonal Japanese dishes — this is exactly the kind of restaurant I choose.
