🗣 English Support & Practical Notes

The lunch menu is relatively small and structured around set meals, which makes ordering manageable even without strong Japanese language skills.

English communication is possible at a basic level, and staff are generally helpful when explaining menu items.

Because the dishes are traditional Japanese set meals, visitors unfamiliar with specific fish or ingredients may need to ask simple questions. The restaurant atmosphere is calm and welcoming, making it comfortable for solo diners as well as couples.

A Third Visit Brings Perspective

This was my third lunch visit to Washoku Tantan Sai.

On previous visits I had ordered:

Both were satisfying, so this time I chose the sashimi set.

The quality of the fish was undeniably good. The plate included roughly ten slices of sashimi — tuna, sea bream, and kinmedai among them.

After ordering, the restaurant informed me that kanpachi had sold out, and they kindly substituted with additional slices of another fish.

However, by the third visit, natural comparisons start to emerge.

While the sashimi itself was fresh and well prepared, the overall balance of the meal felt slightly lighter than expected for a ¥2,400 lunch.

Unlike some other lunch sets here, the sashimi set does not include the small salad, which meant the amount of side dishes felt limited. By the end, there was still some rice left, and I finished the meal by pouring miso soup over it.

The dish was certainly good — but compared to the restaurant’s other lunch options, the value felt slightly less compelling.

Atmosphere

The restaurant continues to offer a very pleasant dining environment.

The proprietress, elegantly dressed in kimono, moves gracefully around the dining room, and the staff work efficiently without losing their calm demeanor.

I arrived slightly after noon, during the busiest lunch hour. The restaurant was nearly full, and I waited only one or two minutes before being seated.

Even during the peak period, the service remained attentive and the atmosphere relaxed.

Comparing the Lunch Sets

After three visits, a clearer picture of the lunch menu emerges.

The sashimi set is certainly good, but within this restaurant’s lineup, other dishes may offer a stronger overall experience.

In particular:

  • Bara chirashi
  • Daily Lunch Set (Crispy Oyster Fry Lunch Set)
  • Fish Lunch set (Saikyo-grilled fish)

Both provide a better balance of portions and side dishes.

Final Thoughts

Rating: ★4.0 / 5

A reliable Japanese lunch spot in Minami-Aoyama with a calm atmosphere and careful cooking.

While the sashimi set may not be the strongest option on the menu, other dishes — especially the bara chirashi — remain excellent choices.
